Understanding the RE-Return Bottle Scheme in Ireland
Understanding the Re-turn Deposit Scheme
Ireland's Re-turn Deposit Return Scheme encourages recycling by adding a small deposit to the price of certain drink containers. Consumers can reclaim this deposit when they return eligible containers to participating shops or reverse vending machines (RVMs). To ensure a smooth return process and get your deposit back, it's important to prepare your bottles properly.
Step 1: Identify Eligible Containers
Not all bottles and cans are part of the scheme. Make sure your container is eligible:
-
Look for the Re-turn logo on the label.
-
Accepted materials include PET plastic bottles and aluminium cans.
-
Check size: Only containers between 150ml and 3 litres qualify.
-
Glass bottles are not accepted in this scheme.
Step 2: Ensure the Container is Empty
All drink containers must be completely empty before returning. Residual liquids can damage machines and complicate recycling:
-
Pour out all remaining liquid.
-
Do not rinse or wash, as this is not required.
Step 3: Keep the Container Intact
To be accepted, the bottle or can must retain its shape and have a readable barcode:
-
Do not crush or flatten the bottle or can.
-
Avoid removing or damaging the label.
-
Ensure the barcode is clean and legible.
Step 4: Keep the Cap On
Leaving the cap on the bottle is recommended for recycling efficiency:
-
Helps prevent spillage during return.
-
Ensures the whole bottle is recycled properly.
Step 5: Choose a Return Method
You can return eligible containers via two main methods:
-
Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs): Found in many supermarkets, insert bottles one at a time. You’ll receive a printed voucher to redeem at the till.
-
Manual Return Points: Smaller shops may accept containers over the counter and issue cash or credit directly.
Step 6: Redeem Your Deposit
Each returned bottle or can earns you:
-
€0.15 for containers between 150ml and 500ml.
-
€0.25 for containers over 500ml up to 3 litres.
Bonus Tips
-
Store bottles upright in a bag or box to keep them in good condition.
-
Return regularly to avoid accumulation and ensure quick redemption.
By following these simple steps, you can make the most of the Re-turn Deposit Scheme while supporting a cleaner, more sustainable Ireland.
